Today Indian Film Industry, one of the world largest art industry in the world, celebrates 149th birth anniversary of its pioneer and scholar Dadasaheb Phalke. Dhundiraj Govind Phalke popularly as Dadasaheb Phalke was born on 30th April 1870. He was producer-director-screenwriter and a painter at heart. He's known the Father of Indian Cinema.

The 1st length motion pictur in india produced by Dadasaheb Phalke. Phalke is seen as the pioneer of the Indian Film Industry and also a scholar of Languages and culture of India. His first film Raja Harishchandra released in 1913, a silent film in Marathi.The female characters in the film were played by male actors.

He made 95 feature length films and 27 short films through out his career, which had a range of 19 years till 1937. His famous and most noted work include Mohini Bhasmasur in 1913, Satyavan Savitri in1914, Lanka Dahan in 1917, Shri Krishna Janma in 1918 and Kaliya Mardan in 1919.

The Government of India in 1969, started the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, for lifetime contribution, was instituted in his honour. The award is one of the most prestigious awrds in the Indian film industry and is the highest official recognition for film personalities in the country.
